About My Portraits
My paintings are oil paintings and mostly of faces. All kinds of faces fascinate me, especially those that show hidden suffering or strong emotion. I find the medium I use opens up avenues to express a multitude of characteristics: sensitive characters, strong characters, or those that have more hidden under the surface – or behind that smile. My use of the medium naturally emerges from what I sense from the subject while painting them.
Although I enjoy design, colour and form, my real passion for faces goes beyond the form and there are some faces I could paint over and over, because of their untold stories which somehow are reflected in their eyes, posture and expressions. To me a successful portrait is one that conveys the spirit and depth of the subject’s ‘beingness’, sometimes caught in a fleeting moment and at other times imprinted deeply in the lines of their faces.
