MARKUS THONETT ART - Card Cuts
CARD- CUTS are made by cutting and lifting sections from mounting board, thereby revealing the usually much lighter substrate of the board. This creates a high contrast result as in wood block or Lino cuts. Only in this process the result is more immediate. There is no printing required to see this contrasting image emerge.
My card-cuts are often sparked off by a memory, a place or an event. I find that the limitations of this process are precisely what makes it so attractive to processing complex imagery or interpreting soft and multi-tonal imagery into just the two tones of the board and its substrate.
I have experimented with introducing colours and tones to the card cutting process by using oil crayons on the board before cutting into it. I am then able to use water based paint in the cut out sections without affecting the areas already covered in oil based medium, making use of the wax resist process.
While it is exciting to explore the possibilities of additional colours and tones, I keep coming back to the pure form of card - cutting, precisely because of the limitation it poses.
